A lesson for the early bird’s soul

We must be cautious of judging
another’s slumber
for we know not of their rhythms,
circadian or otherwise.
We awake at our own pace,
in our own divine timing.

Death does not have to be
the browbeating boss,
chastising us for a minute’s tardiness.
Early bird, please remember:
no matter when we awaken
the worms we need will be there
nourishing out bones without ceasing,
for it is we who feed them
when we close our eyes
for our final slumber.
